A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the reproductive care of women and girls. Teenage girls generally do not need a pelvic exam and a Pap exam from a gynecologist, but if and when you do, there are a few things you should know.
The nurse will have you enter the examination room and review your periods and other medical details. Then, the nurse will explain which articles of clothing to remove. The nurse will most likely provide a sheet to cover you. You can also request to leave on your shirt or ask if you can wear a robe from home. You can also ask for your mom or other trusted adult to be with you.
The exam table will have stirrups for you to place your feet. The doctor will examine the outside of your vagina and may ask to insert a device, a speculum, to view inside your vagina. The doctor might also put one or two fingers inside your vagina and the other hand on your abdomen to examine your ovaries and uterus. Ask any questions you may have. Fortunately, you probably will not need to see the gynecologist again until the next year.
